Backup a directory to multiple archive with a specified size limit
(perfect for backing up to fixed media like DVDs!)
Overview
tarlimit is a simple command line utility designed to help individuals create backups of their data onto fixed media. If the data being archived is larger than the selected media, the data must be split up and placed on several seperate disks (or what have you). tarlimit is the solution to this problem, which would otherwise be solved manually. It will take a directory and archive it, starting a new archive whenever it nears the user specified size limit.
Availability
tarlimit was designed for Unix and its derivations, especially Linux. In theory, it does work on Windows and Macs. In practice, there are a few options which will not work in Windows and Macs, and tarlimit is not tested in those environments. Because tarlimit is a commandline utility, there is no intention to support Windows or Macs, merely because their user base expects gui utilities. If an individual wishes to provide feedback for those platforms, however, we could take the time to make it more portable.
tarlimit is presently released as source code and as a debian package. It only depends on python, which is installed in the vast majority of Linux distributions.
